Bhutan – The Last Shangri La

If you have ever dreamed of traveling to Bhutan but have delayed your trip because it doesn’t seem affordable, you should know that this near-perfect Shangri La right next to Nepal is easily reachable and affordable. ItrekNepal offers a 5 day trip to Bhutan that is a perfect introduction to this exotic country. A one- hour morning flight from Kathmandu to Bhutan offers resplendent views of Mt. Everest and other fabled Himalayan peaks, and the landing into the deep forested Paro valley is a most remarkable aviation experience.

On your excursion you will visit perfectly preserved ancient temples and fortresses (dzongs), hike up to the fabled Tiger’s Nest monastery nestled on the side of a cliff, and experience a pure Buddhist culture as it has existed for centuries. You will also enjoy being in the only Asian country that is not over-populated, without traffic hassles and with a sense that you are a special visitor in the most special place.

The daily cost of traveling in Bhutan is relatively high because the government mandates a high quality of service and a significant portion of tour fees are used to keep up the excellent roads and other infrastructure throughout the country. You will also be cared for by experienced local guides from the moment you arrive, be transported in a comfortable private 4wd vehicle, stay at fine lodgings that meet western standards, and have all your meals included. This all-inclusive, high-quality approach to travel in Bhutan insures your enjoyment and comfort throughout your stay.

The Last Shangri La tour prices start at around US $1600 including Bhutan airfare and visa. You can find out more about this and other trips to Bhutan at

The Amazing Kathmandu Valley
Most visitors to Nepal are drawn to the spectacular Himalayan peaks and the chance to see them up close by trekking up to high altitudes. But what do you do if you’re not interested or able to trek in the mountains? The Kathmandu Valley has an amazing diversity of scenery and attractions, many that are rarely seen by western travelers focused only high altitude trekking.

Joe Cummings, renowned travel writer and author of several Lonely Planet books about Asia , was a recent guest of iTrekNepal. Here is what he said about his week in the Kathmandu Valley

“Our week in Kathmandu Valley with iTrekNepal was a stunner from start to finish. I had visited Pashupatinath , Nepal’s oldest and holiest Hindu pilgrimage spot before, but after being there on the final days of Maha Shivaratri in the company of our guide Shree, I came away with a much firmer grasp of what the place is about. Dwarika’s Hotel tops my list of favorite lodgings in the capital. While justly famous for the Nepal’s largest collection of antique carved-wood door and window frames, beautifully integrated into the hotel architecture, Dwarika’s also deserves high marks for its emphasis on environmentally friendly guestroom amenities, not to mention the personal but unobtrusive service, outstanding dining options and the coziest hotel pub in town. The location within easy walking distance of Pashupatinath is an added bonus. In Bhaktapur we enjoyed staying at the simple but very comfortable Bhaktapur Guest House. The lodge’s quiet hillside location adjacent to a natural reserve and quaint, village-studded valley offered day-hiking options in addition to our forays into the old city. Once again, Shree proved to be an extremely capable guide, taking us through the lesser-explored alleys of this awe-inspiring Unesco World Heritage site. One night we were treated to a hearty Newari feast and bonfire sing-a-long with other iTrekNepal guides. An overnight stay at Dwarika’s Himalayan Shangri-La Village Resort, where we were again greeted with excellent service and fine dining, topped off a perfect week in the Kathmandu Valley.
